Style becomes safety!

Recently, the Delhi Traffic Police came up with a brilliant idea of promoting the safety measure of women bike riders. It is a well known fact that in India, it's not mandatory for women pillion riders to put on a helmet. Though some years back, the Government tried to regulate the rule that concerned the safety of women riders. But since it's a country of various religious values, Government failed.

Taking disadvantage of the same rule, women who ride the bike (not a pillion rider) do not give a damn to put on a helmet. They are more concerned about their hairstyle but their head.

And now, the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) thought the same way these young women riders do. They roped in Sonam Kapoor who is an inspirational figure globally when it comes to 'Fashion'. On 17th November 2012, she posed with a two-wheeler while donning a helmet near India Gate. During this campaign, she advised bike riders, especially women, that they must put on a helmet while riding bike even if they are pillon riders.

The Fashionista Sonam Kapoor joined the DTP campaign after she learnt that two sisters died in a road accident while riding a scooter without helmets in Ashok Vihar, New Delhi.

Joint Commissioner of Police,Traffic, Satyendra Garg confirmed that the its true that the two sisters were not wearing helmet and the other person who collided with their scooter escaped the serious injuries as he was wearing a helmet.

It has to be understood that one should not wait for such accidents to happen and shake your conscience! Hopefully, this step of Delhi Traffic Police spreads the required awareness and saves some lives.

Anti-Corruption CCTV

Recently, in a very famous reality TV show Bigg Boss Season 6, some various characters were sent to the house of Bigg Boss. The tagline of this season is "Alag Chhe" meaning It's different. In an episode there was one revolutionary cartoon artist Aseem Trivedi who had to visit the jail for expressing his views on the Indian politics through his art, suggested a great idea to prevent the corruption and bribery.

At least it will reduce the incidents in the Government offices. While talking to one of the cameras mounted in the house, he said - "...Every Government office must have camera and mic for every responsible officer or a staff member. This could put a lease on the corruption..."

He didn't say it to get himself registered on the reality show. He actually meant it. Now the question here is whether it's possible or not! And if it is not possible then what are the (parliamentary) reasons behind it.

By installing those CCTVs in every Governement offices, the walls will not only have ears but eyes too. Won't it be easy to track down the culprit? It may also help those honest and innocent Government employees who can be trapped by the needy and greedy civilians who keep the power in their pockets next to their mobile phones.

It's time to open the eye that can speak truth!

Khakee is a new colour for goons

In India, colour of the police's uniform is called Khakee. The term 'Khakee' is derived from the Persian word 'Khak' that means 'Soil'. The reason why the uniform of the police is called Khakee, should be clear to you now. When the policemen join the force, the oath is sworn that they will always fight for their country (read soil here) and they will make sure that no one violates the civil rights of the countrymen.

Though Khakee colour is very light colour similar to the tint of dry soil, but now this colour is dark enough to drape the new goons of modern India.

Here are the few excerpts from an article published on 'Times of India' dated Sep 1, 2012

"He had secured an advance of Rs 31 lakh but the two men took the amount, saying the property sale had been challenged and they needed the money to bribe the cops, the complaint said..."

and

"...three men, including Crime Branch constables Amit and Pyare Lal bundled him into a car. " They made me talk to one of the accused who threw his weight around saying that he had told him he could anything to me. Then they took me to crime branch (Malviya Nagar) and tortured me. An inspector came to me and asked to pay up the money and threatened him saying he had done many encounters and next would be mine," alleged Kochar. "They made me sign some blank papers and some forms... One of the accused began to show video clips of torture in custody."

These underlined phrases show that once you are gripped by the policemen, they can make you do anything they want. Even if you know your civil rights, you can not shout out those rights louder than their sticks and threats.

In above mentioned case the victim went to a police station but he didn't know that he is going to a swamp. The question for us is that what should we do to not to see ourselves in such a terrible situation. Why are we given those fundamental rights which are useless in the hour of terror and torture.

Patience is beyond stop-line

It is not only the issue with those who are driving fast to get ahead always. But it is a problem with the drivers stopping on a traffic signal when it is red. It is lack of patience. Drivers don’t even possess ‘p’ of patience. No one stops behind the stop line. They can wait for 110 seconds out of 120 but last 10 seconds is the period that showcases their impatience.

They don’t even care about the allotted space for pedestrians to cross the roads. Zebra crossings are just the decoration part. Even pedestrians who are quite vulnerable to the road accidents don’t care to use zebra crossing to get to other side of the road. They just jump on it and start walking in the middle of heavy traffic.

Remember the TV advertisement of a tyre company in which a biker stops an inch before the pedestrian to avoid a close encounter. The pedestrian who is busy talking on phone and carrying a baby in his cart doesn’t even realize his mistake and starts scolding the biker.

Well, It shouldn't be considered a 'creative' piece by the adman. It is happening in real life. Everywhere on the road! Cross your fingers when you are on the road.

‘Parking issue’ a new rage!

The Road rage in this motor-age especially in the country owned by the hot-blooded Indians is very common. But here is another inclusion to it. The parking rage! It was foreseen by many some time ago as the numbers of sale of the motor vehicle was going up and up. The recent incident of setting a four-wheeler and a motor bike on fire by the fuming residents of a residential colony in New Delhi shocked not only the owners of the vehicles but everyone who got to know about this event.

Reason: “It was parked in my area”, quoted by one of the mob off-record.

The Mayans were right. The doom will come but not from out of the planet. We enraged citizens are bringing it in from within. Ohhh at least we are all together to bring the end of this world.

Do we all want to see enough of parking lot but no cars to park, no human to drive a vehicle to the parking area?

Speed ‘Breakers’

Speed 'Breakers'

Driving under shade is always been difficult on the roads of India. Why? The reason is lack of proper light-falling street lights. One must be depending on the headlamps of his/her vehicle. But what’s even more irritating and dangerous are the speed breakers without any white paint on them. They are not visible in the dark roads and most (read all) of them are not in a comforting shape.

You hit the road with a cool head but end up hitting your own head on the roof of the 4-wheeler. Bikers may lose their control on the road. These invisible bumps on the road may hurt you badly and you may end up your short drive in the hospital.

But we as a very responsible citizen do ignore this too. We think that it’s the fault of Municipal Corporation or any other department. We abuse them and move on. How many of you have ever decided or tried to go beyond accusing and abusing those irresponsible officials?

Oh, does this question hurt your ego? We don’t want to see any of our family or friends in such a drastic situation. If we can’t fix this, we can at least put these people under pressure to have this fixed. We can file a request that, for sure, will be followed by a complaint.

P.S. These speed breakers are not smoothly built and well maintained.

"Meter doesn't function"

It’s very common and now has become normal for many citizens to hear it, “Meter nahi chalta” (Meter doesn’t function). Some of the autowallahs (Autorickshaw drivers) don’t even look at the face of customers. When ask to go to a destination, they calculate with their own policies and tell you the rate. The rate that is much higher than the legally chargeable fares. Those who are in hurry or can’t argue for their rights simply hop in and move on. Yes, they move on, motivating such lunatics to keep repeating their highly irritating acts.

You don’t have to fight the autowallahs, just find a traffic policeman nearby and complaint. Or jot down the number of the autorickshaw and make a complaint. Or use your convincing power to make the driver understand that whatever he is doing is not legally or morally right. Make him understand that he is somewhere acting like a Government by looting a common man.

Well if in case you don’t possess such a convincing power, then follow the link. Lodge a complaint and vent out your frustration and anger. It takes less than a moment than commenting on the Facebook.

Following is the chart of fare an autowallah should ask.

Fare	Rs 19/- for first fall of 2 Kilometer (upon downing the meter) and thereafter Rs. 6.50/- per Kilometer for every additional Kilometer
Night Charges	25% of the fare (11:00 PM to 5:00 AM)
Waiting Charges	Rs 30/- per hour or part thereof (Subject to a minimum of 15 minutes stay)
Luggage	Rs. 7.50/- shall be charged as extra luggage charges whereas the driver/ operator shall not charge and money for a shopping bag or a small suitcase

This post is dedicated to all the bike riders (read daredevils) and those who find it convenient to travel on bike that the 4-wheels drive. Bike-riding is fun but a risky activity if precautions are not taken. It is quite noticeable that many of the young bike riders don’t like to put on the helmet. They just can’t voluntarily have their hairstyles messed up.

But one should think of the head on which they are growing their hair. Think of the skull inside which releases the adrenaline, when you accelerate your bike. One must wear helmet on, but what sort of?

A helmet should...

not obstruct vision.
not impair with hearing.
be light weight.
not cause fatigue which causes crashes.
not cause skin diseases.
not increase the probability of neck injuries.

Kind of helmets to be used :

It should have a thick padding of thermocole- at least 20 mm- which must extend to the sides of the head. A full face helmet is safer by all means.

Components of the helmet and their roles :

The Shell : The shell of a helmet is an injection molded thermoplastic or a pressure molded thermoset that is reinforced with glass fibers or made of fiber glass.

It absorbs energy in an impact:- The shell bends when the helmet is impacted and the underlying foam deforms. At moderate speeds the shell can take one-third of the impact energy.
It distributes local forces from an impact:- Rigid objects like stone or a projecting beam can cause a skull fracture at low forces, the shell acts to distribute the force of such impact eliminating the risk of penetration.
It allows sliding on road surfaces:- The shell being rigid and having a convex shape allows the helmet to slide along a road surface without there being an excessive force.
It protects the face and temples:- Full-face helmet is beneficial in protecting the face and jaw. The chin bar of such helmets contain rigid foam to absorb energy for direct blows on the chin, prevent facial bone fractures and prevent the lower part of the forehead and temple being struck.

The foam liner : This is a molding of polystyrene beads or polyurethane foam. It provides a stopping distance for the head. The foam can compress by 90% during an impact, although it recovers partially afterwards. But this helps increase the stopping distance thus reducing the peak deceleration of the head. It also protects as much as possible of the head.

Proper strapping system : It is essential to wear a well-fitting helmet for the effective working of chinstrap system. To test if the helmet fits your head properly, tightly fasten the chinstrap and then pull helmet off forward by gripping the rear and then pulling. The strap must be threaded correctly so that the buckle locks the strap when it is pulled from the chin side. The strap must be pulled as tight as is bearable under the chin.

Speed over 50 ! Pay Challan or go to jail !

With a very heavy heart, I want to confess that I won’t be driving more than 50 kms per hour on the roads of New Delhi. I will definitely look up at the informatory traffic sign board that depicts the maximum speed allowed.

But running at more than 50 even on the road that permits 80 kms per hour?

No, A big NO! I won’t be heavy-footed on the accelerator. Who knows when the boundary of that road ends and you will not get the enough time to slow down back to 50. Meanwhile you are being shot by a speed gun installed just a few meters away. This leads to what…?

CHALLAN, a fine you would have to pay in such cases. You should be, as technically you are breaking the law.

I received the challan after one week which said that either I have to pay 1400 rupees or go to jail for 3 months or both can be served to me in case of non-payment. So ... I won't speed up!

In New Delhi, the speed limit varies. For e.g. on the ring road it’s 60 for cars, but on outer ring road it’s reduced to 50.

Check the speed limit.

It's not 'FINE'

Imagine you park your car off road near a tea stall to have a sip of tea or a puff of cigarette. Some traffic policemen come to you with a fine book and ask you to pay fine. You ask the reason; they show you the board which is 200 meters away and ahead from the tea stall. For an obvious reason, you won’t drive ahead to see any information or warning and then drive in reverse to have a cup of tea.

But you are legally trapped.

There are several cases like these happening in everywhere in the country. If in the nighttime, I am travelling in my bike, the patrol team stops me and asks for the documents. But if I am in my car, they don’t care and bother to get up from their chairs funded by the Govt.
